Commercial Buildings
Interior Hotels and residences
Lighting design for hotels is divided mainly into two parts. The rooms and the public spaces.
They are both interesting in terms of design but the approach is completely different. The fittings that bring light in the private rooms must be hidden so the decorative fittings are put in evidence. The space in the public spaces and especially in the lobbies represent the status of the hotel so the light must come from decorative luminaries that give a character.
Commercial centres
A sustainable design is a must for the commercial centers since the energy needed to illuminate these vast areas is huge.
The same principles that are valid for the creation of a strategy for a Master Light Plan apply for this kind of spaces as well because they are similar to a small town:
Orientation,surprise,visual comfort,excitement ecc.
Colour and Light Play for Kidz – Nicosia Cyprus
The Playforkidz centre in Nicosia is a private enterprise built for the entertainment of small kids, family and young people. The context is completely dark as the building is situated in an open area in the outskirts of the town where many malls attract people during the week ends. Only the street lights throw yellow light on the perimeter wall. The challenge was to create a vivid atmosphere with the minimum cost and the very careful use of coloured light. Instead of using the standard RGB colour changing pattern the variations of blue and white have been used. So the cost has been reduced and the result was satisfactory. Attracting the attention of the people and adding a colourful element on the top.
Constraints: The columns are metallic and non vertical. The budget was extremely low and the high trees on the perimeter wall were hiding a large part of the building from the street.
Control system: The control system is on off because the client did not want a complicated panel to control the lights
The variation of the blue light created by LED strip on the top gives a new dimension on the top of the building . The white light gives accent to the curve of the roof. The 150W HIT projectors emphasize the top end of the columns and illuminate the top of the shades in front of the restaurants in the ground floor.
The balance of light and shade is achieved by the bright light from the interior. The reflections from the light sources are visible in the water of the swimming pool.
The variation of the blue light created by colour changing RGB LED strip dimming 75W (every 5 m) on the top gives a new dimension on the top of the building. The white light gives accent to the curve of the roof. The 150W HIT medium beam projectors emphasize the top of the columns, The most important element of the structure. This light catches the eye of the by passers.
