The proposed custom made luminary is illuminating the space with diffused light creating a festive atmosphere. The whole area is now in crisis following the general economic crisis in the island.
The proposed pole in the image (right) is holding a shading device that will drop a pattern of light and shade on the pavement during the day and night. The whole district was recreated in 3d so the cilents will have a more clear view of the light effects.
Nicosia commercial district, at the moment, is missing the connection to the city centre.
This is quite peculiar considering that the distance is minimal.
The connection to the old part of town and the connection through the area itself is of great importance to give a sense of unicity to the area ans to create a destination.
Various elements in urban planning and lighting design could be used to connect visually, socially and culturally a place.
In this case our main tools are:
1 – Light connectors, a very strong and visual lighting system
to be used particularly at entrances and main avenues
and to connect the old part an the new part;
2 – Uplit trees to create a connection through the site;
3 – Enhancement through light of historical and cultural
buildings.
Open Spaces
The architectural synthesis is put in evidence using the tools of light. Intensity, Linearity, Shade, hierachy.
Above: The Porto Bello Complex in Limassol. The old olive tree in the yard is the center of attention although is kept in shade. This gives a dramatic vharacter to the tree. The magenta colour of the frame is keeping the whole view into a frame.
Left: Chrysospiliotissa church in the caves in Nicosia. The blue light under the stairs indicates the old part of the church before the restoration. The downlights are hidden above the pergolas to protect them from the vandalists.
Above left: Athletic Park in Limassol. The plasticity of the space is put in evidence by the shaving of the light on the concrete surfaces.
